JOB ADVERTISEMENT: CHARLS AT WUHAN UNIVERSITY



The China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS) is a large-scale interdisciplinary research project jointly led by Wuhan University and Peking University. CHARLS provides high-quality microdata representing households and individuals aged 45 and above in China. The sample covers over 10,000 households from 150 districts and counties, as well as 450 village-level units nationwide. CHARLS aims to promote interdisciplinary research on population aging and health issues, thereby providing a more scientific basis for the formulation and improvement of relevant policies in China. 

To meet the needs of project development, we are recruiting the following positions domestically and internationally:


Position 1: Postdoctoral Research Fellow

According to Wuhan University’s postdoctoral recruitment plan, the CHARLS team plans to recruit the following three types of postdoctoral researchers: 1. Hongyi Postdoctoral Fellows, 2. Key-funded Postdoctoral Fellows, and 3. Research Project Postdoctoral Fellows. The supervisors for these three positions are all Professor Zhao, Yaohui. Professor Yaohui Zhao is a professor at the Dong Fureng Institute of Economic and Social Development at Wuhan University, a part-time professor at the School of Economics and Management at Wuhan University, the Executive Dean of the Institute of Big Data for Health and Medicine at Wuhan University, a part-time professor at the National School of Development at Peking University, and a “Changjiang Scholar” distinguished professor appointed by the Ministry of Education. During their tenure, postdoctoral researchers will become familiar with the analytical tools of CHARLS data and receive professional research guidance by participating in research projects within the project team. Outstanding candidates may be recommended to apply for teaching or full-time research positions at Wuhan University and work in the CHARLS team for the long term.

  1. Job Responsibilities: Participate in data research, data analysis, and paper writing for the CHARLS team, and provide support for field work.

  2. Application Requirements:

    (1).  Applicants must hold a doctoral degree from well-known universities at home and abroad, or have passed the dissertation defense (limited to Hongyi Postdoctoral Fellows). Graduates with a research focus in applied microeconomics are preferred, while consideration will also be given to candidates in the fields of demography, sociology, and public health;

    (2). Proficient in modern econometric methods, and able to use common data analysis software such as Stata or Python proficiently to process large-scale microdata;

    (3). Excellent English listening, speaking, reading, and writing abilities;

    (4). Age not exceeding 35 years old (as of April 30, 2024);

    (5). Obtained a doctoral degree no more than three years ago (as of April 30, 2024);

    (6). Applicants who have obtained tenure or entered tenure-track positions are not eligible to apply for this project.

  3. Salary and Benefits:

    (1). Salary:

    i. Hongyi Postdoctoral Fellows: The university will provide an annual salary starting from 380,000 RMB (pre-tax) after adding national postdoctoral project grants, as well as grants from Hubei Province and Wuhan City;

    ii. Key-funded Postdoctoral Fellows: The university will provide an annual salary starting from 260,000 RMB (pre-tax) after adding national postdoctoral project grants, as well as grants from Hubei Province and Wuhan City;

    iii. Research Project Postdoctoral Fellows: The university will provide an annual salary starting from 180,000 RMB (pre-tax) after adding national postdoctoral project grants, as well as grants from Hubei Province and Wuhan City.

    (2). Benefits: Employees will be entitled to provident fund, pension insurance, and occupational annuities. They will also receive priority access to postdoctoral apartments or housing subsidies, as well as benefits such as enrollment of children in preschools or schools, and medical benefits.

Application Deadline: The Hongyi Postdoctoral Researcher position is recruited quarterly, and the deadline for this period is April 20, 2024. Applicants are encouraged to submit their applications as soon as possible. Candidates who pass the first round of interviews will be invited to write a research plan (based on CHARLS data) and then formally submit the materials according to the requirements of Wuhan University. Position 2: Researcher

  1. Number of Positions: 2-3.

  2. Job Responsibilities: Participate in data research, data analysis, and paper writing for the CHARLS team, while providing support for field work.

  3. Compensation and Benefits: Negotiable, depending on work capacity and performance.

  4. Job Requirements:

    (1). PhD graduate (including recent graduates);

    (2). Majors in economics, sociology, public health, data science, or related fields, with a preference for those with research focus on applied microeconomics;

    (3). Ability to conduct independent research;

    (4). Proficiency in modern econometric methods, proficient in common data analysis software such as Stata or Python;

    (5). Excellent English listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills, with preference for those with excellent English paper or research report publication records;

    (6). Able to participate in paid training in the near future.

Position 3: Advanced Data Analyst

  1. Number of Positions: 2.

  2. Job Responsibilities:

    (1). Provide programming and data analysis support for field surveys and related research conducted by the project team;

    (2). Design and develop relevant questionnaires and programs;

    (3). Write research reports.

  3. Recruitment Criteria:

    (1). Master’s degree or above in economics, statistics, or other related majors with a focus on data processing preferred;

    (2). Proficiency in the Stata language, familiarity with Stata C API and Python API;

    (3). Proficient in data processing modules in Python such as Numpy, Pandas, etc.;

    (4). Familiarity with low-level languages such as C or Fortran preferred;

    (5). Excellent learning ability, diligent and meticulous work attitude, strong sense of responsibility;

    (6). Good reading and writing skills in both Chinese and English;

    (7). Good communication, organizational, and teamwork skills;

    (8). Able to participate in paid training in the near future.

  4. Compensation and Benefits: This position is under the labor contract system of Wuhan University. A labor contract will be signed, and competitive compensation will be provided by the project team, with a minimum monthly salary of 12,000 yuan before tax, depending on the work capacity and performance.
